Connecting Quarks to the Cosmos by going underground

In 2002, the National Academy of Science convened an August panel to examine the deep connections between physics and astronomy, and to suggest opportunities for discovery at this interface. the panel’s report, entitled ‘Connecting Quarks with the Cosmos: Eleven Science Questions for the New Century’, outlined questions that are not only profound, but have a good chance of being answered within a decade or two. Among these questions were four for which the answers could come in whole or partially from experiments to be conducted at DUSEL:

Question 1. What is dark matter?

Question 4. Did Einstein have the last word on gravity?

Question 5. What are the masses of the Neutrinos, and how have they shaped the evolution of the universe?

Question 10. How were the elements from Iron to Uranium made?
