Lead

Cal Tech physicist Dr. Riccarod DeSalvo urges you to "take advantage of your friendly, crazy scientist." He promises 'just a little astrophyscis for friends and neighbors- no math, no formulas, just pictures and fun."

Dr. DeSalvo already has installed instruments underground at the Sanford Lab as part of an experiment to prepare for a much larger, ongoing study of gravity waves.

Geoscientist Tullis Onstott: "Finding life where you don't expect it "

The Auditorium
Lead-Deadwood High School

320 S. Main Street

Lead

Princeton University geoscientist Tullis Onstott has discovered living organisms over three miles below the surface of the earth. His research on life in extreme environments on earth could shed light on the possibility of extraterrestrial life. Onstott was named to last year's "Time 100", which the magazine describes as "the people who shape our world."

Thursday, April 24, 2008-- 7 p.m.
Physicist Robert Svoboda: "Searching for dark matter "
Black Hills State University
Student Union
Spearfish

Physicist Robert Svoboda of the University of California at Davis hopes to hunt for "dark matter" 4, 850 feet underground in the Sanford Underground Laboratory at Homestake. Scientists think "dark matter" and "dark energy" comprise most of the mass of the universe. So far, no one has detected either.

Friday, April 25, 2008-- 7 p.m.
Physicist Hitoshi Murayama: "Cosmology for everyone "
The Classroom Building
South Dakota School of Mines & Technology

501 E. Saint Joseph St.
Rapid City

Physicist Hitoshi Murayama of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory has researched “particle cosmology” and “supersymmetric phenomenology,” but he also hosted a “Physics Barbecue for Kids.”  He’ll explain why going deep underground can help reveal mysterious phenomenon like “neutrinos.”

*The Sanford Underground Laboratory at Homestake is sponsoring the April 2008 lecture series, along with Black Hills State University, the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology, Lead High School, the Homestake DUSEL Collaboration and the Homestake Adams Research and Cultural Center.
