Science On The Move is a statewide project to provide students in South Dakota schools with high quality science lab experiences. Two large semi-trailers (Mobile Science Labs, or MSLs) are equipped with a broad range of equipment, from powerful microscopes to molecular biology tools such as gel electrophoresis cells to interfaced computers. Students can use equipment inside the trailers or the equipment can be brought into classrooms for use. Science On The Move may be the first (and only) experience that students in small and/or rural South Dakota schools have with this kind of equipment. The trailers circulate around the state, and usually remain at a school for two to five days before moving on. Students have a great science experience. In its first year, Science On The Move has been very popular with students and teachers! The drivers are highly experienced science teachers themselves. Jerry Opbroek (of Mitchell, SD) drives MSL #1, and Bob Vanderlinde (of Elk Point, SD) drives MSL #2. Both are highly motivated and capable with all of the equipment in the labs, and are always helpful to local teachers. The Labs are available to teachers who have attended the week-long summer training. Teachers can select from a wide range of activities appropriate to their topic and grade level. Science On The Move is administered by the South Dakota Center for the Advancement of Math and Science Education (CAMSE). For further information, peruse the site or contact us.
