Embedding the Standards for Mathematical Practice Within the Common Core Standards, 2015
June 15-19 2015 8:30 am to 4:00 pm
Location: Black Hills State University
This workshop will focus specifically on using concrete approaches to understand abstract mathematical ideas. The math content areas to be emphasized are taken directly from the Common Core Content Standards for grades 6-8 Statistics and Probability. Specifically, the mathematical content addressed will focus on applying the mathematics to practical situations through solving real-world problems involving quantitative measures of center, data distribution, measures of variability, and statistical variability. Teachers will increase their own conceptual understanding of the mathematical concepts, which will improve the quality of their instruction around these topics.
Using multiple representations, manipulatives, and hands-on learning activities will be key components of the workshop. Each participant will receive a classroom set of manipulatives and teacher resource books of hands-on mathematics activities, which will also be the primary math activities used during the workshop. During the workshop, the Standards for Mathematical Practices will be embedded and modeled for teachers to use when they implement the activities in their own classrooms. This inquiry-based approach can help students (and teachers) understand the mathematical concepts behind the procedures that are often taught in isolation.
Applications are now closed for this workshop.
