PMT Meeting

November 17, 2024

1:00 pm - 3:00 pm, TIE Office, Rapid City

Members Present: Joe Hillberry, Jim Meszaros - Douglas, Charles Sykora - Wall, Jo Hartmann - Kadoka, Kathleen Van Horn - Meade, Kathy Hood - Spearfish, Mitch Chapel - Lead-Deadwood, Tim Creal - New Underwood, Colin Paterson - SDSM&T, Ben Sayler, Andy Johnson, Janet Lillehaug, Laurie Barnaud and Dorothy Keller - BHSU-CAMSE

Members Absent: John Swanson - Belle Fourche, Bob Magelky - External Evaluator

Annual Report -The meeting began at 1:00 with Janet asking Ben to review the Annual Report. Ben gave an overview of the main items and stated that if anyone wants a copy of the complete report with all of the evaluator information to contact us and we will get them a copy. One of the things that Bob Magelky suggested in his report was that we need some leadership training within the project. There are some workshops planned for summer to meet that need. It was also mentioned that perhaps we should do another Lead Teacher workshop. We have attached a copy of the annual report summary for your information.

Use of kits -The question arose about how many kits teachers will be using by the end of the project. The following statement is from the grant: "…(during their first year) each participating teacher will coordinate and implement two national curriculum modules or units in their classrooms … Two additional units will be implemented by each teacher during each of the following years for the duration of the project".

Cost share letters - Janet handed out copies of past cost share letters to help each PMT member put together a letter for their district for the period 1/1/00 - 12/31/00. By the end of February, a report is due to NSF that must include cost share letters from the school districts. Please send your letters soon (no later than February 1, 2025).

Laurie Barnaud, Materials Center Director - Laurie asked how she could help the districts the most. She told the group that in order to help them she needs the following information for the 2000-2001 school year.

1. Names/ numbers of kits and numbers of students by grade

2. Names of teachers and the grade level they teach

3. Numbers of students by grade level

Laurie passed out the latest literature from FOSS on the Middle School kits.

Distribution of information - We are increasingly having problems contacting teachers. E-mail often doesn't work. Either they don't have regular access or their systems are down. Asked for suggestions for better communication. Decided to double up on information by sending it to the teachers, their principals, and the PMT members. Hope that the information gets to the necessary people.

Professional Development - We would like to count appropriate activities for professional development that are not generated by the grant. In order for activities to count, we should know about them beforehand, there should be a written description of them, and participants should sign in. If you have any questions about this contact Janet.

Workshop Schedules - Janet handed out copies of the tentative workshop schedules for Spring and Summer. The group accepted the dates for the Spring workshops. March 17th was mentioned as a possible problem because it is State basketball weekend. That particular workshop is on a Saturday and is for Kindergarten teachers, so we decided to let the date stand. We will be sending out official spring schedules shortly. As soon as summer dates are established, we will send out that schedule. We will be paying stipends ($60) for any Saturday workshops. We hope to use teachers with extensive experience to lead future workshops. They will be paid $325.00 to compensate them for prep time.

Field Trip - Information on Dr. Julia Sankey's field trip was handed out. This field trip is planned for June 6-13, 2001. There will be some classroom work and then travel to the site in Marmarth, ND. External funding for the project is still being explored. This field experience will be able to accommodate 16 teachers.

Student Performance - The next item on the Agenda was evaluation of student performance. Horizon is hosting a workshop in January to address this issue. Ben, Janet, and Bob Magelky plan on attending. They will collect information about student performance assessment and report back to the PMT.

Fundraiser - Janet has put together a fundraiser with Queen City Motors to provide T-shirts for teachers in the BLAHST Project who have reached 100 hours of professional development. Queen City Motors is having a grand opening for their new facility over Thanksgiving weekend. All proceeds from their car wash will go to the project.

Our next meeting is tentatively scheduled for February 9th. We will send a notice later for verification and location.
