Offered to K-8 Teachers In the Belle Fourche, Custer, Douglas, Kadoka, Lead-Deadwood, Meade, New Underwood, Rapid City Middle Schools, Spearfish, and Wall School Districts

BLAHST Goal

The goal of the Black Hills Science Teaching Project (BLAHST) is to provide all K-8 teachers involved in science education with 100 hours of professional development by August 31, 2006. Other professional development opportunities are explained in more detail on page 4. Information on science and math materials available for checkout and the refurbishment of science modules is described on page 4. If you have questions about the BLAHST Project, please contact Janet Briggs at 605.642.6875, or by e-mail at janetbriggs@bhsu.edu.

Graduate Credit

Completion of 15 hours of workshop time qualifies participants for one hour of graduate credit from BHSU at a reduced tuition rate of approximately $60 per credit. Fifteen hours of class time is required for 1 graduate credit, 30 hours for 2, and 45 for 3.

Please Note:

For those who have graduate credit available, for which you haven't paid, please do so either this spring semester by May 1, 2006, or during the summer semester – June 5 – July 31, 2006.

Stipends

Teachers with less than 100 hours will receive a $60 stipend per day for attending Saturday workshops. Some of the workshops are considered leadership level and stipends will be paid to all participants regardless of their accumulated stipend hours. Please read the workshop descriptions for details.

Science and Math Materials

The Center for the Advancement of Math and Science Education (CAMSE) at BHSU hosts a large library of inquiry-based science materials such as FOSS and STC, which can be checked out for use in your classroom. There is a $10 fee for using a kit, charged to your school district. You can view available kits at our web site: www.camse.org.

CAMSE provides consumable refurbishment materials for district-owned kits throughout the school year. You may order replacement items from CAMSE as soon as you have completed a kit and know what is needed, or you may keep a running list and submit it at the end of the school year. Live materials can be ordered anytime, but please keep in mind you will need to allow 2 weeks notice for most live materials except butterfly larva, which requires 4 weeks notice. Ordering live materials in cold weather months can be tricky and is discouraged.

If you need materials for science lessons contact Kathy Quinn at 605.642.6872 or e-mail her at kathyquinn@bhsu.edu.

Inquiry-based math materials, such as Connected Math and Math Investigations are also available for you to check out at no cost. If you have questions about the mathematics materials, you can contact Vicki Kapust at 605.642.6571 or by e-mail at vickikapust@bhsu.edu.

Guidelines for Professional DevelopmentThe BLAHST Project receives major funding from the National Science Foundation, and these funds carry with them a suite of expectations. The most important of these is that teachers are asked to participate in 100 hours of professional development before the end of the project.

The three areas of focus for BLAHST are:

PD Opportunities in Science Content:

PD Opportunities related to Instructional Materials:

PD Opportunities in Pedagogy and Alignment of Content, Materials, and Pedagogy:
